9 Ways to Revel in National Great Outdoors Month

By Arbor Day Foundation | June 1, 2020

June marks National Great Outdoors Month—an initiative to encourage people to go outdoors and explore nature. After being in quarantine for several weeks, many people are anxious to get outdoors again. For many folks, green spaces and parks have been the safest place to get out and move around while social distancing during COVID-19.

  1. Take a Hike

Did you miss National Trails Day? No worries, now is your chance to walk, hike, or bike along a trail. Bring along your handy dandy tree pocket guide or download the iPhone app so you can identify trees along the way.

2.  Go Camping

Camping is a treasured tradition for many families, and a sign that summer is here. Camp under the stars and relax in the tranquility of the forest.

3. Tubing on the river

Sometimes you just need to cool off from the heat, tubing on the river is one of the most fun ways to spend your day outdoors.

4. Go Fishing

Fishing brings peace of mind and scenic backdrops when you simply need an escape.

5. Zip line

For the adrenaline junkies with a weakness for breathtaking views, find a nearby zip line and swing through a forest or national park.

6. Relax in a Hammock

After a long week, who can blame you for wanting to curl up in a hammock and read…or tree watch.

7. Climb a Treehouse

For the young at heart, climbing a treehouse will never be dull. It’s quiet, exclusive and has nice views. Have you climbed the 50-foot tree house at Arbor Day Farm?  Warning: tree climbing may bring back great nostalgia.

8. Kayak on the lake

What is summer without water sports? If you need a break from swimming, kayak on the lake for a relaxing experience, or river for a bit more thrill.

9. Have a Bonfire

A bonfire with your family or friends is a great end to a day spent outdoors. Make s’mores and let the fun continue through the night.
