In celebration of National Peach Month we will feature a few different peach varieties on our blog throughout the month of August.
Peach trees originated in China hundreds of years ago, where they were considered a symbol of luck and immortality in ancient Chinese folklore. Nowadays, their wealth of nutrients and antioxidants continue to make them a popular healthy treat among all ages and are still a popular birthday gift in China.
The Hale-Haven peach tree (Prunus persica ‘Hale-Haven’) is a self-pollinating hardy variety that is popular for its high-yielding properties. It bears a large orangish-yellow firm freestone fruit that is perfect for eating fresh, or canned or frozen to be enjoyed at a later date. It is also a favorite fruit among roadside vendors because its thicker skin helps it to stand up to handling and prevents bruising. In addition to its high production rates, the tree has a fast growth rate and typically begins to bear peaches after 2–3 years of germination.
Environmental Conditions
- Thrives in zones 5–8.
- Grows best in sandy or well-drained soils, with a minimum of six hours in full sun.
Physical Attributes
- Grows to a mature height of 15 to 25 feet, and a spread ranging from 8 to 20 feet.
- Has high productions levels, with fruit typically ripening around mid-June to mid-July.
- Produces large orangish-yellow freestone fruit with thick skin and a firm flesh that is perfect for canning and freezing.
- Grows in a round shape with pink blossoms in the spring.
